Some people have had an amazing experience at Alexia's Bridal, and others said they were a little snooty. She does have a sister store now, Lana Addison that also has nice dresses, but not as expensive.

-Tradition in North Hills is nice too.

-I have heard horror stories about Victorian Rose (I know someone in the bridal business that said they were great when you were ordering your dress from them, but they've butchered numerous dress in alterations!)

If you don't mind a drive and are on a budget (and don't mind less attentive service), Bridal Mart in Burlington is a pretty nice place to go and the high volume they work with makes the cost a little lower.  I went once on the weekend and twice on weekdays, and let me tell you... Monday's are dead around there and I got service just like the smaller more expensive boutiques.

There is also A Beautiful Day Bridal in North Durham by Costco and Michelle (I think that's her name) is wonderful.  They carry Casablanca, Da Vinci, and a few others.  Beautiful shop, beautfiul gowns, and great small-boutique service.  I swear I sound like a commercial but I'm not.

I ended up finding my dream dress at David's Bridal, and I'm plus-sized, so my options were limited as far as being able to try on the dress before ordering, but I could have gone to the smaller boutique and had them attach the dress to my undergarments (I'm a size 18) but I just didn't get the feel of the dress (for example, I tried on a dress size 14 in a style I loved but because the proportions are less I just didn't get the look I thought I would).
Again, depending on your budget - the girls at Priscilla of Boston in Cameron Village were so sweet when I was there looking for bridesmaid dresses and accessories for me.

I've been in there several times and had different consultants and they have all been quite pleasant.

Heard great things about Alexia - but it is pricey...they carry Vera Wang, for example.

Agree that I've heard mixed reviews about Victorian Rose - they have a good selection for a mid-price point.  However, I would not use their alterations ppl...head too many not so great things.

I got my dress from the Bride's Against Breast Cancer Tour of Gowns and they are coming to Raleigh next month - so might be worth a look.  My dress retailed for over $5,000 and I got it for $800:  http://events.triangle.com/raleigh-nc/events/show/124961385-raleigh-nc-brides-against-breast-cancer-vip-event
Depending on your timeline and if you're on a tight budget like me: I got my dress from Carolina Bridal World in Smithfield. It's not a fancy place but the prices are good.  The dresses I tried on ranged from $499 - $999.  But it does take 4-5 months for the dress to come it.
I'm going to try out Gorgeous Gowns in Cary this weekend (they had a booth at the wedding show), as they advertise themselves as a consignment dress shop. Mixed reviews online, but it never hurts to look! I'll post back on my experience.
Definitely give Victorian Rose a try, at least for finding your dress. They were incredibly helpful, no pressure, and a dream to work with. I met one of the girls that works there at the bridal show and she remembered my mom and I when we went in a week later, even though we just talked for a minute, and didn't even exchange names. You can always alter somewhere else. Just make sure you have an appointment.

If you're looking for a cheaper alternative, we went to A Bridal World also. They were also extremely helpful, and had better quality dresses than David's.
